Magna Carta

In 2014 the Society was proud to be the lead organisation in the Bury St Edmunds Magna Carta 800 celebrations. In 2016 a permanent sculpture was unveiled in the Abbey Gardens to mark these celebrations.

Bury’s crucial part in this important period in history has been the subject of much research and the people of Bury St Edmunds have celebrated their link with the Magna Carta for hundreds of years with the town’s motto Shrine of the King, Cradle of the Law.

The importance of the Magna Carta in American history is celebrated in our cathedral where the shields of the 25 Barons involved are displayed courtesy of a generous gift by the American organisation ‘ Dames of the Magna Carta’ – descendants of these Barons.
