The Bury Society administers a generous legacy from a former member, Dr Alison Rae, a onetime Deputy Medical Officer for the old county of West Suffolk. Following Dr. Rae's death in 1987 a bequest of £86,181 was left to the Society to be spent, at the Society's discretion, on "local projects whether of creation or preservation in or near the town centre".
The Fund is administered by the Executive Committee of the Society acting as trustees, and to date 30 projects have received donations from the Fund, totalling over £117,000. This is well in excess of the original endowment, yet almost £52,000 remained available for use at the end of the last financial year. This indicates the care with which the Fund is managed.
Below are some of the many projects that have benefited from the legacy. We like to think that the lady would be very proud of the ways in which her generosity has enhanced the town.
Repairs to Chequer Square Obelisk |
"Pilgrims" Herb Garden in Abbey Gardens |
Purchase of Sybil Andrews’ linocut"Market Day" |

We would be very pleased to manage any legacy, however small or large, tailored to the requirements of the donor.
