Save our Corn Exchange

 Corn-Exchange-02

Built in 1861-2, the Corn Exchange has been at the heart of Bury St Edmunds. Its iconic frontage captures some of the heritage of the town.
Nearly 100 years after it was built, it was proposed that the Corn Exchange should be demolished. This led to considerable protests and a “lively public debate”, leaving the Corn Exchange as we now see it.

Now, 40 years after the last attempt, a fresh attempt is being made to change our Corn Exchange – this time into a ‘drinking establishment’. The Council short-listed two conditional bids for investigation and consultation. These bids were from J D Wetherspoons (for a public house) and Abbeycroft Leisure (for a children’s play/young people’s activities.)

Following the a drop-in exhibition at the Corn Exchange on Tuesday 15th June, the Council discussed the findings and, on 23 June, the full Council decided to select the proposal made by Wetherspoons to convert the first floor into a pub - subject to being granted a licence.

Our historic Corn Exchange deserves better
and so does the town.

The Blanchard Planter, St. Mary’s Square

Having been made aware of the deteriorating and broken state of the Blanchard Planter by concerned local residents, The Bury St Edmunds Society, St Edmundsbury Borough Council, the Bury St Edmunds Town Trust, and the Bury in Bloom Committee have met together and are jointly launching an appeal to contribute towards the cost of the necessary repairs.

For further details of the project and how to contribute to the appeal, please follow this link

Civic Voice1

Civic Voice

Following the demise of the Civic Trust, the Civic Voice has been set up as a first step towards creating its successor. Decisions are now being made on the new national body for the civic movement. The Bury Society strongly supports this initiative; we have our own web page devoted to the Civic Voice - please follow this link.

The Bury St Edmunds Society was formed in 1971 by a group of people concerned about the town and its future. That concern was prompted by a proposal to tear down St John’s Street and redevelop the area in modern style.

Our aim is to ensure that , whilst Bury St Edmunds continues to grow and prosper, it remains a beautiful town in which to live, work or visit.

Browse our Web site, particularly the News and Diary sections, for more information about The Bury Society (as it is more familiarly known), our activities, and how you can be involved.
