We keep aware of matters of local importance, often before they reach the public domain and campaign to influence planning decisions. Our goal is to avoid “anywhere housing” in the town, to ensure that there is distinctive design to reflect the town’s character.
Our committee examines new planning applications at monthly meetings making representations to the Borough’s planners and Councillors and others, including Ministers of State when appropriate.
We endeavour to:
urge a balance in the growth of retail;
protect and enhance the viability and vitality of the town centre;
monitor any policies for selling off the town’s assets.
If suitable recommendations have come forward, plaques are awarded yearly for excellence in architecture and building, both for the restoration of old and the design and construction of new buildings.
A newsletter is published three times each year for which members’ contributions are welcomed.
Talks, often open to the public, and visits on subjects of local interest are arranged for members and their guests.
