In the 40 years of our existence we have prevented a number of poor examples of development and have encouraged other better ones. ‘Bury in Bloom’ is one of the Society’s sub-committees and has gained regional, national and international awards and recognition in nearly every year.

In particular, we played a major role in the examination of the Local Plan. Further, with generous assistance of a legacy from Dr Rae, we have contributed to the restoration of the Unitarian Meeting House and other projects for the enhancement of the town.

What of the future?

Our main present concern is to ensure that the redevelopment of the cattle market site, of over ten acres (over four hectares) near to the town centre, meets the future needs of the town whilst matching and respecting the essential character of our beautiful historic town.
We shall best achieve this and other work by continuing to increase our membership and by maintaining our good working relationships with English Heritage, the Bury Town Trust and the Suffolk Preservation Society.
