Current activities

With the many current and planned developments for our town, we will give a brief description of the projects and, where appropriate, include a link to any relevant web site for current news. In the face of so many planned developments in the town, the Bury Society Committee is urging the authorities to proceed slowly and to give each new major development time to settle before embarking on a new one..

The Bury Society is currently engaged in activities as follows:

  • The Bury Society and the Suffolk Preservation Society are still working to preserve the Borough Offices in recognition of the notable 1930’s architecture and importance to the Angel Hill scene.
  • Shared Space - this approach to allowing traffic and pedestrians to share the same space without hindrance has been seen to be a success in many places. The Bury Society is engaged in the debate concerning having a Shared Space in Bury.
  • Green space in town. The Society has a concern about the absences of trees and greenery in the Cattle Market development and is working to find solutions to make the environment more attractive and in keeping with the character of the town.
  • The Theatre Royal - theatre name tags. Many people gave freely when the Theatre Royal was first restored. One method was by ‘sponsoring’ a seat, with the donor’s name on a tag fixed to it. The seats, formerly in a cinema, have gone but we understand the tags are being kept in an archive. The Society is urging the Theatre Royal that such donations should be recognised by a display so that today’s theatre-goers can appreciate past generosity. The display of these tags would be a fitting reminder of the efforts made by fund-raisers in the 1960’s and 1970’s.
  • The Gershom Parkington clock collection. The Society strongly advocates that this world-class collection be kept on display, in its entirety, in the town in accordance with the bequest. We continue in our discussions with the Borough to achieve this.

Further details of these, and other activities, may be found in our newsletter that is sent out to all members.
